THE OCEAN DATABASE PROJECT

The collection of oceanographic data is important for understanding the ocean and the climate system and the impacts of stressors such as climate change on marine resources. Moreover, Small Island Developing States such as the Republic of Mauritius which relies heavily on its ocean resources need sound oceanographic data for informed decision making for the sustainable development and management of ocean resources.

The Government of Mauritius has emphasised the importance of dissemination of ocean information through the harmonisation and standardisation of ocean data thus enabling accessibility to a wider community. Mauritius has embarked on an ocean data management project which needs to be expanded both spatially and temporally across its Exclusive Economic Zone.

The Mauritius Oceanography Institute (MOI) is contributing to this initiative with the development of an Ocean Database. This project which is built using GeoNetwork is not only to allow information accessibility to users but also to give a temporal and spatial perspective for the sustainable development of the ocean and its resources. It uses an open source, standard based and decentralised spatial information management system. It is designed to enable access to geo-referenced databases and cartographic products from a variety of data providers through descriptive metadata, enhancing the spatial information exchange and sharing between organisations and end users.

The main goal is to increase collaboration within and between organisations for reducing duplication and enhancing information consistency and quality and to improve the accessibility of a wide variety of geographic information along with the associated information, organised and documented in a standard and consistent way.

THE MAURITIUS OCEANOGRAPHY INSTITUTE

The Mauritius Oceanography Institute (MOI), was established in January 2000 by the proclamation of the MOI Act (Act No. 24 of 1999), to rationalise and co-ordinate oceanographic research and development activities in the Republic of Mauritius.

The role of the MOI is to advise the Government of the Republic of Mauritius on the formulation and implementation of policies and programmes related to oceanography for the development of a sustainable blue economy.

As mandated, to underpin the development of oceanography, the MOI has conducted more than 30 research projects over the past years. The Institute has implemented projects at national and regional levels.
